Call of Juarez: The Cartel crashes, loading error, black screen low performance fix

Call of Juarez: The Cartel is a first person shooter action game from Ubisoft. Set in modern-day Mexico, it is part of the Call of Juarez western-themed video games.

First of all check that you meet the minimum system requirements for Call of Juarez: The Cartel here.


Black Screen Crash

Disable your second monitor via Control Panel >> Display. Start the game and change the resolution settings and restart the game.


Crash at Intro video

Go to Control Panel >> Sound and open Playback device. Now go to Advanced tab and select 16 bit, 48000Hz.


Stuck at loading screen

Go to the executable file in the Call of Juarez folder and setting compatibility for Windows XP SP3.
OR
Download a copy of avifil32.dll and add into sytem32 folder


Game performance lowers or game lags

Try following solutions
  • Disable NVIDIA 3D Vision driver if you have it
  • Turn On or Off V-SYNC/Triple Buffering from NVIDIA Control Panel or ATI Catalyst Center
  •  Stop other background processes during gameplay
  • Update your graphics card drivers
  • Lower the graphics settings, resolution and other effects

Crashes at Launch /  Menu

Go to the executable file in the Call of Juarez folder and setting compatibility for Windows XP SP3.


No Sound

Go to Control Panel >> Sounds >> Audio Devices. Click on Volume tab >> Speaker settings >> Advanced >>Performance. Now set the Hardware acceleration from FULL to NONE. Set Sample rate quality from BEST to GOOD.


Crash to Desktop
  • Tell your firewall/antivirus to allow Call of Juarez
  • Go to Control Panel >> Sound and open Playback device. Now go to Advanced tab and select 16 bit, 48000Hz.
